New Partnership Helps Bring New Life to the DTES Street Market
A new partnership with Portland Hotel Society means the DTES Street Market can stabilize and thrive. DTES Street Market Coordinator, Sarah Blythe, gives an update on changes at the market.
There have been many changes in 2016 for the DTES Street Market Society. We have grown from operating one day a week to seven. We recently went through a Request for Expression of Interest (RFEOI) process with the City of Vancouver, to which we applied in partnership with the Portland Hotel Society (PHS) to continue daily market operations. On April 22, 2016 we received news that the City of Vancouver would like to move forward with our proposal, which is very exciting news for the Society as we can implement new sustainable ideas and business opportunities.
What this means for the market is sustainability for volunteer workers and training opportunities that will help improve the lives of many people in the DTES. Not to mention a place for local vendors to reuse and recycle items that would likely otherwise end up in landfills. The market creates alternatives to survival sex trade and extreme poverty, and is an important pillar of Vancouver’s diverse low income economy.
The PHS will play an important role in partnership with the Society. While the DTES Street Market Society will keep its independence, the PHS will take care of administration. The PHS can also provide many new opportunities for DTES Street Market volunteers as the PHS has access to many other frontline services such as shelter, housing, dentists, medical care, rehabilitation training as well as accessible employment opportunities.
We are looking forward to all of the new opportunities coming up for the DTES Street Market Society. There have been many difficulties and challenges running a DTES market and but for the persistence and camaraderie of the volunteers and vendors, the project might not have survived.
